When thinking about oral health, many people believe it’s all about the teeth. While you may obsess over the whiteness or straightness of your teeth, you might end up forgetting about your gums! No matter how good your oral health is, your gums are susceptible to dental issues. Gum disease is a prominent problem that many people deal with.  Luckily, there are ways that you can combat the risks of infection:

Gum Health Tips

Brush & Floss

It might not be much of a surprise, but brushing and flossing your teeth daily can help your oral health. According to the American Dental Association, the recommended brushing technique is as follows:

  • Place your brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums.
  • Brush all outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of the teeth.
  • Tilt your brush vertically to clean the inside surfaces of your front teeth and make several up and down motions.

It’s also recommended to brush your teeth twice a day using a soft-bristled brush and to swap out your toothbrush every three to four months.

Ensure that you’re flossing at least once a day. Flossing helps remove plaque and food that may be stuck between your teeth. Flossing after meals is recommended.

Toothpaste & Mouthwash

Using fluoride toothpaste when brushing your teeth has a positive effect on oral health. It can keep your teeth and gums resistant to bacteria or tooth decay. The fluoride helps to remineralize teeth. There are many fluoride toothpaste options on the market.

Using mouthwash is also a beneficial way to clear out any food particles and debris stuck in your teeth. Mouthwash can also help prevent gingivitis, the spread of tartar, and reduce plaque buildup.

Get Regular Dental Cleanings & Check-Ups

Making a regular appearance at the dentist can help in preventing gum disease or other dental issues before they become serious. Getting a professional cleaning can remove plaque buildup and tartar. Setting up appointments regularly can ensure that you’re on top of your oral health needs.

Quit Smoking

If you’re a smoker, quitting can be a big step in preventing oral health problems. Smoking weakens your immune system, which puts you at risk of gum disease, and other health factors. Quitting smoking is considered one of the best ways to prevent the risk of gum disease or infections.

A Balanced Diet

Having a balanced diet supports the health of your gums. Eating healthy foods supplies essential nutrients, vitamins, and calcium needed for strong teeth and gums.

Some foods that you can incorporate into your diet to support gum health are the following:

  • Fresh fruits and veggies
  • Milk
  • Yogurt
  • Water
  • Tea
  • Nuts
  • Whole grains

Avoid foods that are sugary, as they can not only cause problems for your teeth, but for your gums as well.

According to a skilled University of Alberta dentist, the four main commitments a dentist should uphold are: Prevention, an accurate diagnosis, exceptional treatment, and comprehensive follow-up care.
